Starving for Gravity - Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

Starving for Gravity the Melodic Rock group out of Orange County, Ca has been one of our favorite bands since they first began rehearsing at Hothouse Studios and lit up the place.

Now  Lucas (vocals), Brad (guitars), Dee (bass), Richard (keys) and Mark (drums) have been voted one of the Top 100 Best Unsigned Bands in the U.S. by Music Connection Magazine in their 19th Annual “Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists and Bands Poll”.

In addition to the Music Connection staff, freelance journalists, club bookers and other industry professionals determine the results.  This is a great accomplishment earned by Starving for Gravity and validates their talent and artistic quality.

The Abellera family and Hothouse Studios has been building our relationship, since we opened the studio doors 7 years ago.  I can remember JoJo bringing the kids in to jam for the first time.  Justine was only 11, Bryan was still a baby and A.D. had just become a teenager.   Boy did they have fun.  The kids were so excited.

Now Bryan is playing the drums, Justine is right out front leading the group on guitar and vocals and JoJo (dad) is still playing those bass lines.  Watch this video of them covering the Bruno Mars song “Just the Way You Are”.

Thank you JoJo, A.D., Justine and Bryan, it warms our heart to be part of your life’s experience.

I had an amazing experience Thursday night.  I went to watch Messenger, one of our favorite bands that rehearses’ here, perform at a restaurant/bar called the Sunset Room in Hacienda Heights.  I had a blast!

Messenger’s two hour set began with Melinda solo on acoustic guitar performing original material and covering some of her favorite songs.  She had the crowding mesmerized.

The band took the stage and the sounds of Messenger filled the club.  The crowd loved their music and loud applause ended every song.  Patrons got up and started dancing and the place was hopping with energy.  Messenger put on a dazzling show.

The Sunset Room is a throwback to a better time when music venues didn’t make the band pay to play.  Here is the amazing part…the Sunset Room pays the band to be the live entertainment for their patrons.  That’s right, they pay the band.  They know the value of live music   

The Sunset Room offers an upscale ambience with a laid back vibe.  They have a well rounded menu and every Thursday emerging bands take center stage and the dinner crowd is there enjoying their meal and the live music.  I just loved it.

I’ll be mentioning the Sunset Room to all the bands that rehearse here at Hothouse Studios as the venue to play.

Now world famous video director Robert Schober pka (professionally known as) Roboshobo who is known for his work on videos for Metallica, Mastodon, the B52′s, Green Day and No Doubt will be at the helm of “The New Los Angeles” MTV video for It’s Casual.

We were honored that It’s Casual and Robert Schober chose the Auditorium here at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios to film all the performance footage for “The New Los Angeles” MTV video.  If pro video directors are using the Auditorium there must be a reason.  Hothouse Rehearsal Studios the affordable pro studio.  We’ll be posting behind the scenes video footage of “The New Los Angeles” MTV video shoot soon.  So stay tuned.

It’s Casual Friday May 22 at the Relax Bar in Hollywood.  It’s Casual will be headlining the show, but the support bands are headliners too.  Influential skateboarder Tony Alva and D.F.L. vocalist Tom Davis have formed a new band called G.F.P. and they’ll be blowing up the Relax Bar along with Bad Samaratins, Chapstick and the MeatMen.

Doors open at 8pm and the show begins at 9pm sharp.  There is a $10 dollar admission, please 21+.  Relax Bar is located at 5511 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, Ca 90027.  Relax Bar is on the Northwest corner of Hollywood and Western.

Submit your Music for the Malibu Music Awards.
The Malibu Music Awards is part of the Malibu Arts Festival, which is being held July 26-27, 2008 at the Malibu Civic Center in Malibu, CA. This year, the festival is opening its doors to Sonicbids songwriters and is now accepting submissions in 11 different categories. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners in each category, and one grand prize winner will receive a performance slot at the festival, airfare to Los Angeles, free stay in a 5-star Hotel (Malibu Beach Inn), plus a recording session with Gold & Platinum producing artist Carl Graves, formerly of Oingo Boingo.

Each submitted song will be reviewed by a panel of judges from the music industry including Jenna Voorhees – Universal Music Publishing, Jenna Leigh – owner of Circle of Songs, Terence Davis – owner of Great Music Studio, DJ Carolyn Fox – KHZ Radio, and Gold & Platinum producing artist Chris Henry.
